I virtually won, then really would lose my money.I virtually won !
A couple of weeks ago, a very nice Lady phoned me from Hong Kong. Her Company is celebrating an anniversary and their Sponsors are being generous. I received 2 Scratch Tickets. One of these read :
Congratulations !
You won the 2nd prize which is USD 100,000.00 CASH !
To claim your prize, phone No. ----------------(I do not mention the number here). So, being always curious what People could be up to, I phoned to find out. Still that same nice Lady talked to me. She wanted an ID from me. So, I faxed the Winning Ticket and my Driver's Licence, not my National ID.
After a few phone calls, that nice Lady informed me that my price of USD 100,000.00 was ready to be transferred, but there is a 15% Tax to be paid to enable the transfer. So, they will pay 10%, but I must transfer 5% to their account. 5% would roughly amount to Rs. 150,000.00.
Shall I take the risk to send out Rs. 150,000.00 as part of the 15% Tax, and then receive my winning of Rs. 3,000,000.00 ?
1. Suppose the whole story s true. If I do not send out my share of 5% Tax, then, I receive nothing !
2. If the story is not true, I send out my share of 5% Tax, I lose Rs. 150,000.00 which makes me the most stupid Man in the world.
The French say " Un tu le tiens, deux, tu l'auras ! " meaning " One you have it, two you will have it, but not sure !" That French saying, translated in the local dialect, it sounds very much like " Ene ti licien vaut deux ti lerats or A little dog is same value of two little rats ! " Funny, isn't it ?

Always focusing. Wonder if he is thinking.
REX means King in Latin. Indeed, he is. Rex is always the first to eat in the Family. Well, it appears that in the old days, Kings never ate first because of obvious reasons.
In a previous blog, I told how he was ill. Only a few weeks old, he suffered a liver problem. The Vet gave him all the medicines, the best. I was ready to trade his health recovery against my car. I fed him every hour with 20 ml of medicated water.
Today Rex is a happy Dog, very attentive, very loving.
Rex loves the water droplets on large flowers. He is no more allowed because he often destroys the flowers.
He also likes to drink straight from the garden hose. Paul and Virginie.
Crossing a river. In my opinion, at that time, Paul must have had more stuffy hair. Virginie with longer hair. Paul and Virginie. (When legend comes true !) Paul and Virginie were Children of two French families who migrated to Ile de France (now Mauritius), before 1810. At that time, there were no aeroplanes. They travelled by ship. At that time, there were no concrete houses and tall buildings. They lived in low huts in the fresh air of Nature; plenty of trees around, scores of birds singing, the sound of the water flowing in a nearby river, the constant caress of the breezes, etc. It appeared that worries and stress were unknown to them. Both Families lived next to each other, and in very good relationship. The family of Paul was not rich. The family of Virginie was rather well off. So it was as in many love stories’ crisis. Paul and Virginie fell in love. Their story would have been too perfect ! Virginie’s Parents decided that she must go back to France for education and higher studies. The disaster started. Already being a nice girl, Virginie had no choice than to obey her Parents. So, she had to go back to France as planned. There was a touching and tearing farewell. Imagine the day before the departure of Virginie. Months passed. Paul waited for the letters of Virginie. Hey, can you imagine if they had the chat possibilities with webcam ? Ha ha ha ! Being a islander, Virginie could not live that high social life in France and always thinking of her Paul. So, she returned back to Ile de France. Her ship was the “Saint Gerant”. The day of her return, there was bad weather. The sea was wild. The “Saint Gerant” was knocked against the rocks. Everybody had to leave the ship for his safely. Do you know the clothes of the Ladies at that time ? No way to swim when you were wearing such clothes. A man asked Virginie to take off her clothes, and he would try to help her to swim to safely despite that wild sea. Virginie did not want to undress herself. She stayed on deck. After the weather calmed down, Virginie's lifeless body was found in shallow sea on a beach, the beach name is now “The Tombeau Bay” meaning the "Bay of the Grave". There is another fruit of the same type that we call " Jeanbosse ".
Children used to love these fruits. Now, we do not see much of them, but instead, we see concrete houses and buildings !

That was years ago. I bought my first Computer.
I was tired to do textiles costing in a copybook. So, I decided I need e-help.
At that time, without experience, I just thought that the Computer will do the work for me. I was surprised to see that it was an empty machine. I had to programme it to make it useful to me.
So, I started to learn the BASIC Language. I learned during one Saturday night and half a Sunday. I did the programming. I tested the machine from the figures I had in my copybook. All the answers were correct.
The next Monday morning, I started the inputs directly from the Textiles Cutting Table :
* Length of mattress.
* Width of mattress.
* No. of tubular folds etc.
The consumption per piece of garment was calculated instantly. Everybody came to see the magic of the machine.
Ever since, I did not have to waste time working out the consumption per garment.
At that time, many, many years ago, it looked magical !
A couple of years later, I travelled to Germany. I bought the Commodore 64. Back to Mauritius, I bought the Commodore 128. Later I bought other Computers IBM compatible as we used to call them. Many years after, I bought computers and Laptops with Windows, making life much, much easier.
Today Computer programming has evolved with Visual Basic, C, C++, C# etc. etc. Scores of languages available to help programming. I always joke : " Insomnia People can be good Programmers ". Not really ! You need be very logical, with some memory to retain what you are doing.

Many People hand carry or pushing a carriage (Caddie ?) full of goods they bought. Why should they spend so much time to locate where they parked their cars ? !!!!!!
The Suprmarket Car Parking locations are : A, B, C, D, E, F etc. Many years ago, I, too, was always wasting my time looking for my car. All too often we look quite away from the area where we really park our car ! So, I decided to help myself.
1. I always park my car away from the other cars. This helps me to visually find it.
2. Trying to remember location A, B, C, or M is stupid. It goes to the short term, temporary memory. Forgotten by the time you enter the Supermarket and come out ! To remember, in my mind, I label E for ELENA or C for CAROL or R for ROSY. So, I do not forget.
This morning I saw a Wife and Husband discussing heatedly about where their Car was parked ! The Wife was worried and in a hurry because their Child shitted in his clothes, the smell attracted a couple of stray Dogs. It was the Wife that had all the cleaning work to do ! Many Mauritians, including a few of my Relatives, served under the British Flag during the Second World War. After the War, the Royal Pioneer Corps stayed in Mauritius for a number of years. Then, they left. I cannot remember the year.
I was a small Boy, and very attentive to what was being said around me. I loved the stories of the World War II events, dreaming I were a Soldier. No doubt, many of the stories were told to please Children. Only later that I learned the factual events.
If I remember well, the Mauritians of the Royal Pioneer Corps were mainly serving in the Middle East.
I learned that " Corps " is pronounsed " Corp " without sounding the S, otherwise it would sound as " Corpse ", meaning something very different.
The arrivals and departures of Ships at Port Louis harbour were always interesting events. From time to time I managed to climb onboard as I had a few Relatives travelling as part of the Troops.
There was no fax or email at that time. All correspondences were done by mailing Letters. I was a small boy and always believed that it was the Birds that brought the Letters overseas. My Mum always had a little symbolic brooch pinned on her dress :

Of all the ships I have known, the ss Empire Ken was and is still my favourite. The name sounds good to my ears.
The s.s. Empire Ken was scrapped in 1957. It was like murdering a living Being.
The Family had good relations with many of the British Service men. One of them was Captain Golden. When he left Mauritius, he gave us many of his kitchenwares. I have kept a Beer Bug as a souvenir of him.
Captain Golden, wherever you may be " Cheers ! "
